Daniil Medvedev can count himself lucky to still be in the match against Carlos Alcaraz during his Wimbledon semi-final on Friday afternoon after a foul mouthed rant at the umpire gave him a code violation.
Medvedev swore at the chair umpire constantly saying f*** you mouthing it to her in anger. She also discussed it with the tournament supervisor so in reality Medvedev was very lucky to still be in the match albeit at the time of writing, he sits nearly on his way out of the tournament 4-3 down in the fourth set.
Medvedev started off taking a 3-1 lead in the opening set and consolidated on a break to go 5-2 up only for the Spaniard to get one back. But the frustration as Alcaraz chipped away at his lead was palpable as the Spaniard sent in a delightful drop shot. Medvedev rushed to the baseline to reach the ball.
But the umpire deemed in a controversial call that it had bounced twice and Alcaraz got handed the game. This set Medvedev off. He cursed at her and then Eva Asderaki, the umpire called the tournament supervisor. Thankfully for Medvedev, he dodged the default and was let off with a warning. Further actions similar will result in a point and then game penalty. But any other umpire could've easily have thrown him out.
Medvedev will at the time be glad he did as he went on to win the tie-break quite easily from there. Albeit Alcaraz came from a set down to go 2-1 up in sets and now sits on the verge of victory as he aims to back up his Wimbledon title from last year. If he wins, he could face Novak Djokovic again.
Djokovic will face Lorenzo Musetti later this evening for a spot in the final after the Italian ended the run of Taylor Fritz earlier this tournament.
