The 2021 Roland-Garros starts today with play set to commence at 11:00 CET but if you wondered what Nadal, Barty, Tstitsipas and the rest had to say continue reading.
The 2021-Roland Garros is the 2nd Grand Slam of the 2021 season following the Australian Open. It will run from May 30th till June 13th and there will be fans in attendance. The event features a strong field both in the ATP and WTA and the only major absences are Simona Halep in the Ladies draw and Denis Shapovalov in the Gentlemen draw.
Ahead of the event, a Media Day was held and all notable players spoke about the event and their expectations. You can see some of the quotes below.
NADAL: "I've been winning a lot but I lost too so I never felt invincible. I just go on court and try my best every day."
SWIATEK: "I am coming to this event not as an underdog but as a winning champion. It puts a little bit more pressure on me. I feel I can win more matches here."
TSITSIPAS: "We are starting a new event. It's a new chapter of mine. I had a great semifinal last year but I'm always aiming for better."
BARTY: "Obviously a lot of memories flooding back. A lot changes since a few years so it feels like a brand new tournament."
MEDVEDEV: "I feel very confident coming here. Very tough opponent in the first round but that's actually a good test."
GAUFF: "I feel like now I know what I'm doing on the court. I just feel a lot more confident on the court."
SABALENKA: "I really like the clay court here in Paris and I really enjoy my time here.
THIEM: "The last 5 years I played two finals, two semi-finals and one quarte-final. I hope I can use those nice experiences to turn a difficult season so far for me into a good one."

- I heartily disagree with Stubbs here. I mean c'mon! The whole idea of giving out wildcards is to give new & up-coming players a chance at getting as much circuit match-practice under their belts as possible. And this is a HUGE must and opportunity for these new kids on the block. Why curtail opportunities for these newbies in favour of stalwart monopoly?? That just isn't fair. At least give these lesser known players a chance to become more familiar at playing in bigger tournaments & give them also a chance of getting the crowds behind these underdogs.
