Umpire drama again took centre stage at the Cincinnati Open as Jack Draper sealed the win over Felix Auger-Aliassime albeit he was pretty much handed the tie by the umpire Greg Allensworth in dramatic circumstances.
Auger-Aliassime and Draper played out a superb tie which was won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 by the Brit in two hours and 37 minutes. However Auger-Aliassime got more and more angry at the umpire awarding the win to Draper on match point. The Canadian argued that Draper's volley had hit the frame of the racquet and touched the court before going over the net.
Draper seemed to be unaware of where the ball was going. But Allensworth was questioned in particular by Auger-Aliassime.
"I wasn't looking," Draper said.
"Did you not see the ball bounce on the floor?" He shanked it on the floor. What do you mean?" Felix Auger-Aliassime questioned.
The umpire involved was the main protagonist in the recent issue with Taylor Fritz where he stopped the point mid rally against Brandon Nakashima in the same tournament.
"You're going to get out not and it's going to be everywhere. I'm serious. It's going to look ridiculous. It's gonna be crazy. And I know it's not his place to bring that call, it's a match win for him but it's your place to make that call," the Canadian argued back.
He also argued that it wasn't Draper's responsibility to make said call and tried to get the supervisor down to change the decision as the crowd chanted for the point to be repeated. "It's not your place to make that call. Are you seriously not coming back on your call?" he questioned.
However the protests fell on deaf ears as Draper had the decision upheld by the supervisor too. But more umpire and line call drama to continue this week in Cincinnati with Auger-Aliassime the loser in it all.
