Russia’s young tennis sensation
Mirra Andreeva has warned world number one
Iga Swiatek ahead of their clash at the Cincinnati
Open. The 17-year-old is regarded as one for the future after producing some
incredible results despite still ageing under 18.
Andreeva is currently playing at the
Cincinnati Open, where she booked her place in the quarterfinal after beating Italy’s Jasmine
Paolini with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. With that win, she sets up a
mouthwatering contest against the world number one Swiatek, who cemented her
spot in the next round after beating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets
with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
It will be the first meeting between the two at the highest
level, and therefore, the fans are in for a treat on Saturday. After securing
her place in the last eight, Andreeva was quoted in a report stating that she is ready to face arguably the best player in women’s tennis in the
next round. Andreeva stated that she is aware of Swiatek’s talent and confidence
on the court but believes that she is very confident and
cannot wait to get onto the centre court to face world number one.
“Yes. I feel like I’m ready,” she said. “Of course… she’s
No. 1 in the world. But she’s also a human being. So I don’t think there’s
something exceptional. Of course she’s playing great. She feels a lot of
confidence. She’s very confident on court. I feel like so am I. I’m pretty
confident as well. I’m just gonna go on court and do my best. If it doesn’t go
my way this time, it’ll go my way next time. I will try my hardest to make sure
that this time, it’s my way tomorrow. I think we’re gonna play on center court.
And I liked the center court last time. So it’s good,"
