Roland Garros has seen its fair share of drama in just a few days of competition, but Damir Dzumhur’s second-round win against France's favorite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard brought a rare moment of pure comedy. The Bosnian secured a four-set victory 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, but didn’t realize he had won the match until his opponent strolled up to the net to shake his hand.
After Perricard’s final forehand went long, Dzumhur, completely locked into the rally mindset, hit the ball back towards the French and walked toward the baseline as if he was preparing himself to return Mpetshi Perricard's serve. The crowd chuckled, doubting whether he was playing it cool or just plain confused -and focused at the same time.
When the big Frenchman began walking forward for the handshake, the Bosnian suddenly stopped, raised his eyebrows, and let out a shy smile, finally realizing he’d just clinched a spot in the third round.
"I felt stressed in the third set after I had a break up, really. And then in the fourth set, pretty much the same situation,” Dzumhur said. I didn’t even know I was serving for the match,” he admitted afterward, laughing. “Maybe it was better that way. Less pressure!”
The moment went viral, with fans reacting to the sincere reaction of the 33-year-old veteran who hadn’t reached a Grand Slam third round in seven years. The win was even more impressive considering he appeared to tweak his knee during the match but pushed through.
"If I cannot make it worse, then I can play. They said that nothing is wrong with the knee, it’s just a hit, so I continued to play, " stated Dzumhur.
Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz awaits in the third round. No matter how far he goes, his funny moment will remain one of the tournament’s most remembered reactions.
