The
schedule for Day Five of
Roland Garros French Open 2025 has been released, marking the start of the second round with the top-half of the ATP draw and the bottom-half of the WTA. World No. 1
Jannik Sinner will make his return in an interesting match against the veteran
Richard Gasquet, who is playing his last professional tournament.
Additionally, 24-time Grand Slam champion
Novak Djokovic will return to the court to face local favorite Corentin Moutet, while world No. 5
Jack Draper will also go head-to-head with Gaël Monfils. On the women's side, Americans
Coco Gauff,
Madison Keys, and
Jessica Pegula emerge as the day's heavyweights.
Philippe Chatrier
The day will open with world No. 3 Jessica Pegula facing her compatriot Ann Li (No. 55). Pegula easily overcame her debut against Anca Todoni (No. 88) and will again face a lesser-known opponent. The 2024 US Open runner-up aims to continue advancing quietly, despite the main attention not being on her name this week after an inconsistent clay-court swing.
This will be followed by perhaps the most special moment of the day for the locals, as they will have one of their best representatives of recent times, Richard Gasquet (No. 166), in another appearance after winning his first round match. The historic one-handed backhand player will face an almost impossible challenge against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, and will surely look to bring his best level to provide a party for the crowd who will turn out in droves to bid farewell to his illustrious career.
The third match of the day will feature Australian Open champion Madison Keys (No. 8) against Brit Katie Boulter (No. 38). This is a very interesting match considering Boulter's good form, as she just won her first clay-court title at the WTA 125 Paris last week and overcame a tough debut against local player Caroline Monnet. Keys was impeccable in her debut against Daria Saville, but Boulter is a much bigger test, especially considering the inspiration the European has shown in recent weeks.
Boulter is on a 6-match winning streak on clay courts.
Closing out the day on the main court will be world No. 5 Jack Draper, in a very interesting match against veteran Gaël Monfils (No. 42). The Frenchman had a remarkable comeback in the first round against Dellien (4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1) and will be delighted to return to Chatrier once again, as he is in the final stages of his career. Seeing Gasquet bid farewell earlier might be an inspiration for Monfils, who still has the firepower to cause problems for any opponent on Tour – especially with the crowd on his side.
Suzanne Lenglen
French No. 1 Arthur Fils (No. 14) had a tough draw against clay specialist Jaume Munar (No. 57). In his debut, Fils maintained his composure to overcome the always tricky on clay Nicolas Jarry (No. 149), with a four-set victory. He wasn't entirely clinical in key moments, converting only three of 16 break opportunities, something that could prove costly against an opponent like Munar, a renowned clay-court specialist.
The second slot will be for world No. 2 Coco Gauff, facing 18-year-old qualifier Tereza Valentova (No. 172), a new name joining the broad group of Czech female players and the 2024 Roland Garros juniors champion (in both singles and doubles with Renata Jamrichova). The Czech successfully navigated qualifying and defeated local player Chloe Paquet in her debut. This will be her first appearance against a high-profile opponent in such an important stadium. It's an interesting test for Gauff and a good opportunity for Valentova to showcase the talent that made her one of the best juniors over the past couple of seasons.
The third slot will be for Serbian Novak Djokovic, who comfortably overcame his first-round opponent Mackenzie McDonald (No. 98) in straight sets. He faces the unpredictable Corentin Moutet (No. 73), one of the tour's interesting personalities and a talented player who will surely play with the intention of providing a worthy spectacle for the public, as he habitually seeks to involve the fans in the match. It will be a test of nerves for Nole, who will need to keep his calm against an opponent who should not be underestimated and who, only two weeks ago, surprised Holger Rune at the Rome Open.
The day's closing match on Lenglen will be handled by Australian Daria Kasatkina (No. 17), who faces local player Léolia Jeanjean (No. 100). 'Dasha' had to overcome a tough Katerina Siniakova in her debut and emerges as the favorite against the Frenchwoman.
