Switzerland’s veteran tennis player
Stan Wawrinka celebrated
his victory after the semifinal of the Croatia Open in an interesting manner.
The 38-year-old secured his place in the final of the
tournament after beating Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the last-four clash in straight
sets on Saturday with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
After that victory, Wawrinka engaged with the fans sitting
in the arena, acknowledging every section of the crown by raising the racquet.
Wawrinka will now be hoping to clinch the accolade which
will be his 17th ATP title when he will face Australia’s Alexei Popyrin
in the final on Sunday.
The Lausanne-born will be eyeing this competition as a sort
of training for the upcoming US Open which is set to begin in less than a
month’s time.
Wawrinka won the US Open back in 2016 when he defeated
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the final with a score of 6–7(1–7), 6–4, 7–5, 6–3.
Since then, the former world number three has not played
beyond the quarterfinal stage, something he would like to change this time
around.
