Toni Nadal, the uncle of former world number one
Rafael Nadal,
has stated that his nephew is looking to retire with a big title to his name.
The 37-year-old has already announced that the 2024 season
will be his last as he continues to battle with fitness concerns.
Toni, while talking to Spanish sports daily Marca, stated
that his nephew is excited to return to court and finish his career in style.
"Rafa is fine, on vacation, wanting to hit the court in
2024. Let's hope Alcaraz lets us win something then. He is excited to come back
and retire on the track," he said.
Nadal is termed one of the greatest players in the history
of men’s singles tennis in the Open era.
The Manacor-born has won 22 Grand Slam titles in his
illustrious career, just behind Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the list of players
with the most major title victories.
He became the first player in the history of men’s singles
tennis in the Open era to lift 21 Grand Slam titles, overtaking Switzerland’s
Roger Federer in the process who has 20 titles to his name.
Out of all the major tournaments, French Open remains the
most successful one for Nadal where he lifted the title 14 times which is a
record in itself.
Other than that, he also won two Australian Open, two Wimbledon
and four US Open titles in his career.
Nadal has struggled with a number of injuries in the recent
past and it is because of this reason, he has not taken part in any of the Grand
Slams this year other than the Australian Open.
