Daniil Medvedev provided a peculiar moment during his first-round
Wimbledon loss to
Benjamin Bonzi – making him the first top-10 player to exit the tournament. The French World No. 64 secured the first main draw victory of his career at Wimbledon, against none other than the former World No. 1.
Bonzi – who has never entered the top-40 in his career – delivered a remarkable performance to claim a 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory and advance to the second round of Wimbledon for the first time.
Medvedev fought a close battle for much of the match, but Bonzi was more effective in the crucial moments. Medvedev tallied 14 aces and 12 double faults, in addition to hitting 42 winners and 47 unforced errors. The Russian only managed to win the second set and faltered twice in tie-breaks before exiting a Grand Slam in the first round for the second consecutive time. This hasn't happened since his first two appearances in Slam main draws back in Australia and Roland Garros 2017.
While facing the first set against Bonzi, Medvedev was already showing his frustration with his opponent's solidity and made some spontaneous comments amid his annoyance, which were picked up by the television broadcast. "Why not play like this every day, win millions, be rich?" Medvedev said in French to his team in the stands while waiting for his opponent's next serve. "But no, he [Bonzi] decides to do it once a year," Medvedev added.
The 2021 US Open champion is in a recent year marked by a departure from the sport's biggest headlines. Just a week ago, he reached the Halle Open final (losing to Bublik) and seemed in good form to face Wimbledon. However, he suffers an early defeat – where he was defending semifinal points – and will drop 5 positions in the ranking to World No. 14.
