🗣️ "You guys are all corrupt!" Denis Shapovalov has unloaded on the chair umpire in a stunning outburst on Rod Laver arena. 😳🤯 #AusOpen - Live on Channel 9 and 9Now
Denis Shapovalov lost his cool during his Australian Open quarter-final defeat to Rafael Nadal, sensationally accusing the chair umpire of corruption.
Rafael Nadal escaped Melbourne Park with a 3-2 victory against Denis Shapovalov yet the great was overshadowed by a heated exchange between Shapovalov and umpire Carlos Bernardes. The match was played in very difficult conditions as the heat continues to negatively impact players and Shapovalov simply lost his cool at a moment.
Nadal was taking a lot of time on serve and Shapovalov was not a fan of it complaining to Bernardes at the start of the 2nd set:
"You’re looking at the clock so long ago and he’s still not ready to play. ‘You’ve gotta code him."
Bernardes responded with:
"He’s (Nadal) not ready to play."
Shapovalov was still furios lashing out at Bernardes:
"Are you kidding me? You are all corrupt!"
In the end, Nadal walked up to the net and defused the situation before play resumed. His actions were praised by several analysts for being mature.
