Stan Wawrinka started of the match much better playing impressively particularly on his own serve. He didn't allow any breakpoints to his opponent while breaking Daniil's serve twice en route to a 6-2 1st set victory. The 2nd set, however, was completely dominated by Medvedev. He raised the level of his play mimicking what Wawrinka did in the 1st set.
Great serving to go along with dominant play in the backcourt allowed him to conclude the 2nd set in his favour 6-2. He continued in similar fashion in the 3rd set. His level of serving dipped a bit and Stan managed to create some chances but ultimately couldn't convey. His opponent though took the only chance he had a secured a 6-4 3rd set victory.
At that moment it seemed the Russian is very close to victory. He controlled the match, he controlled the opponent and he looked fresher on the court. Nonetheless, the Swiss came out with some fire in the 4th. He was much more composed and much more patient. His focus was entirely on winning his serve and he was doing it very efficiently.
Medvedev did the same on his serve and we ended up in a tiebreak. It was all Warinka there who won it 7-2. We ended up in the decider with one man flying all over the court while the other slouched. It was the swiss who was flying full of energy. The Russian simply couldn't handle his intensity and Wawrinka closed out the match in dominant fashion 6-2.
It was a spectacular display from Wawrinka, particularly after dropping the 3rd set. At that point, his victory seemed impossible but he once again showed he is a true fighter.
