The former world number three Switzerland’s veteran tennis
star Stan Wawrinka has achieved yet another milestone at the US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is underway in
New York where players from all over the world are participating to showcase their
talent.
On Tuesday, Wawrinka defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in
the first round of the competition in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2,
6-4.
While doing that, the 38-year-old achieved another milestone
as he became the oldest player to win a match at the Flashing Medows since Jimmy
Connors back in 1992.
Wawrinka is now 38 year and five months old whereas Connors
was 40-year-old when he won a match at the mega-event.
The Lausanne-born will be hoping to continue his winning streak
in the competition, especially after such a dominating start.
Wawrinka has an impressive record while playing at the US
Open where he lifted the title back in 2016 after defeating the current world
number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 6–7(1–7), 6–4, 7–5, 6–3.
He is now set to face off Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry
in the round of 64 clash on Thursday.
