"We had a big party": Stan Wawrinka opens up about partying after maiden Australian Open triumph in 2014

Former world number three Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka has opened up about partying after winning his first Grand Slam. The 39-year-old lifted his first major title in Melbourne in 2014, where he defeated former world number one Spain’s legendary tennis star Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open with a score of 6–3, 6–2, 3–6, 6–3.

That victory was a special one as it took nearly five years for a player to break the dominance of the ‘Big Four’ in men’s tennis — including the likes of former world number one Switzerland’s Roger Federer, Nadal, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Britain’s Andy Murray — to lift the title.

Wawrinka has recently spoken to former American player Sam Querry, who has been quoted in a report by the English media outlet Daily Express, where he explained how he partied right after clinching the title in Australia and closing down a bar.

“Did you have a big party that night? What does it look like when you win a Slam?” asked Querrey. “That's the biggest party you can have,” was Wawrinka’s instance response. “No, no, no, I went out Australia directly. Tennis is always difficult. We play a tournament every week. We never have really time to go enjoy and to party. And after the final of a Slam, if you're not going to party now, you will never party during your whole career. So yeah, we had a big party. We closed the bar. I remember they had to lock the bar from inside because we were not allowed to stay longer.”

Wawrinka also revealed that by the time he came out after the party, it was already morning time, and it was a problem for him because he had some media responsibilities to deal with. “And when I got out, it was already sunny outside,” he said. “I had to press to do the next day, one hour after. So it was not that simple.”
