Taylor Fritz's match was suspended due to the Wimbledon curfew, just as the 5th set of an epic battle against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was about to begin. It had been an extremely close match, awaiting a tight finish.
However, the All England Club's curfew – where matches are played until a maximum of 11 PM local time – led the umpire to decide that the 5th set would be rescheduled for Tuesday, a situation that ended with complaints from the players and boos from the crowd.
Fritz undoubtedly had a tough draw against the world No. 36, arguably the most feared server on Tour currently. Fritz performed excellently in the first two sets – with 33 winners and only 5 unforced errors – although his lack of risk-taking ultimately cost him in two close tie-breaks.
Mpetshi Perricard had taken a 7-6[8-6], 7-6[10-8] lead, but an early break in the third set in favor of the American began to change things. Fritz held serve to take the set 6-4, and in the 4th, he made an epic comeback. In a tie-break where he was down 1-5, he won 7 of the next 8 points to send everything to the 5th set.
The chair umpire then decided to suspend the match due to the local time, announcing that the match was halted without the 5th set even starting. Both players voiced their complaints, considering the match was entering its final stage, but it was of little use, as were the boos from the crowd who had to leave without seeing the match concluded.
