WTA Chief Steve Simon brought back the topic of Peng Shuai to the forefront by admitting that no assurances have come from China regarding the investigation of her allegations.
Peng Shuai became a hot topic when she publicly accused a high-ranking government official of sexual assault. The news created headlines around the world but was scrapped rather quickly from the web with Peng explaining it was a misunderstanding.
A lot has happened since then with the WTA suspending all events in China until the situation gets resolved and the chief Steve Simon admitted that there hasn't been much coming from the other side:
"We do need to resolve Peng. We’re comfortable that she’s safe, and we know she’s in Beijing, which is great. We want that. But we haven’t received the assurances that we want with respect to the investigation that we requested."
He continued:
"What’s the real story? That’s all we’ve asked for. What’s the story? She obviously had great courage to come forward with what she said. The principles that are involved are right in line with what we stand for as an organization. And what we’ve asked for is an investigation to understand what occurred, what didn’t occur, and then address it appropriately."
