World no. 7 Alexander Zverev claimed his 14th ATP title in Acapulco, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets for his first trophy at this level since Washington 2018.
The German had to work hard to score his first victory over the Greek after five straight losses, overcoming a slow start and playing better when it mattered the most to seal the deal and secure at least one ATP title for the sixth consecutive season.
Zverev said that he always wanted to win the Acapulco crown, heading to Mexico with that goal and achieving it. The German overcame a slow start and played well in the crucial moments, something you have to do if you want to beat the rivals from the top.
Alexander came from 4-1 down in the opener and won five straight games for 6-4. In the second, he wasted a match point in game ten and had to save a set point in the 12th game before playing on a high level in the tie break to seal the deal and lift the trophy.
"I've always said that this is a tournament that I wanted to win in my career. I have a very strong relationship with Mexico and with this tournament. I came here with a goal, and I achieved it, and I'm thrilled with that. In the beginning, I started extremely badly; I thought I didn't play well at all. I had to fight my way into the match, and I did well to win the first set.
In the second set, I need to close it out against these top players when I have a chance because normally, they won't give you the second opportunity. I thought I played extremely well in the tie-break, and I'm happy with how it went," Alexander Zverev said.
