David Goffin played against probably the strongest unseeded opponent that he could have met in the first round of the US Open, Reilly Opelka.
The tall American was in a good form at the Western & Southern Open as he didn't lose a set in his journey to the quarterfinals. There, he needed to pull out of the match against Stefanos Tsitsipas due to an injury. Now, David Goffin faced Opelka less than a week after that. The Belgian triumphed in 4 sets, but admitted that it was a very difficult match.
"It was great because you never want to play that kind of guy [in the] first round of a Grand Slam, especially on a fast surface. Against that kind of player, big guy, you don't control everything. You can even play well, it's just you lose your concentration for a few seconds and you can lose the set. He can be confident... hit some amazing shots and all of a sudden, the same, you lose the set," Goffin said. "It's something that sometimes you don't control, and sometimes you prefer have the match on your racquet, [so you] feel that if you play your best, good tennis, you win."
