Carlos Alcaraz had heartwarming words for
Jannik Sinner after defeating him in an epic
Roland Garros final. The Spaniard successfully defended his
French Open title, after saving up to three match points and achieving an incredible comeback with a score of 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 [10-2].
It was probably one of the best matches in history. It surpassed five and a half hours of play, and became the longest final in Roland Garros history. The protagonists were the world No. 1 and No. 2, with the Italian leaving empty-handed this time.
At the end of the match and at the beginning of the awards ceremony, Sinner appeared very emotional and affected by the loss. When it was time for the champion's acceptance speech, the first thing Alcaraz did was to offer words to his rival. “It is amazing the level you have, congratulations for an amazing two weeks, amazing tournament,” began the 21-year-old Spaniard.
“I know the hard work you're putting every day, it’s huge, honestly I know how hard you're chasing this tournament or every tournament. I’m pretty sure you’re gonna be champion – not once, but many, many times.”
“It’s a privilege to share a court with you in every tournament, making history with you. You’re a huge inspiration for young kids and for everyone. And for myself as well. I have to say thank you for being such an inspiration.”
Alcaraz secured his 5th consecutive victory against Sinner and takes a comfortable lead in the head-to-head at 8-4 (3-1 in finals). Both will meet again in three weeks at the start of Wimbledon, where Alcaraz will once again be the defending champion.
