Andre Agassi ripped into
Jakub Mensik for deciding to bring his mental coach in just for his match against Alexander Zverev which he lost as the German finally looks to have headed towards achieving his destiny.
Zverev won 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and the perennial nearly man of sorts now has a golden chance as he plays Flavio Cobolli in the final on Sunday. But Mensik decided to bring along Dragan Vujovic who has been with him since he was young. He has been on his team since 13.
Agassi said he should gone for familial support instead of seeking the validation of a mental coach he decided to bring in at the last minute as a late addition to his box. "I'm not a big fan of bringing in a mental coach in the semi-finals of a Slam. You're supposed to bring in your mum at that stage," said Agassi as per
TNT Sports.
"Like, 'come on, mum, you've got to come watch me play the semis'. But bringing in a mental coach? I don't know. It seems like there's only a downside for that mental coach."
Querrey agrees - 'Bring your mum, sister, brother, friend in'
While Sam Querrey also agreed with this estimation and while he said he couldn't bring his mentality into question, he said that the decision to change it and do what he did was somewhat baffling.
"We want to talk about his mentality? In his second-round match he was wheeled off the court basically, came back from a set down where he lost 6-0 to De Minaur," said TNT Sports expert Sam Querrey.
"He's been pretty much flawless when it comes to the mentality and overcoming obstacles this entire week.
Andre Agassi has won eight Grand Slams in his career
"I'm with Andre there. Why change things up at this point? Bring your mum in, bring your sister in, your brother, your friend, not your mental coach."
Caroline Wozniacki added that it isn't perhaps even needed in the age of social media and phones when he can just call him instead of wasting time and energy doing it like this. "You have phones, right? So you can call your mental coach.
"If you have any questions, if you're feeling nervous, call him and say, 'Hey, I'm feeling nervous.' He can give you a few pointers.
"But spending time, wasting energy on sitting down in meetings before your semi-finals? I just don't feel like [that is the way to go]."
