Darren
Cahill,
Jannik Sinner's coach, expressed his joy over Sinner's victory at the
Paris Masters and criticized the tournament's schedule.
Wednesday's action in Paris extended beyond
expectations. World No. 4 Jannik Sinner secured his win against American
Mackenzie McDonald (42nd) at 2:37 am on Thursday after a hard-fought match that
saw him come from a set down.
Sinner's
victory was met with delight by his coach, Darren Cahill, who couldn't help but
criticize the late hour at which Sinner's match concluded:
“2:45 a.m.
Happy for the Jannik win, but zero care for the players welfare with the Paris
schedule,” Darren Cahill wrote on his Instagram stories.
The
controversy continues as he was supposed to play his round of 16 match against
Australian Alex De Miñaur (13th) on the central court earlier on Thursday. However,
the Italian surprised everyone by announcing his withdrawal from the tournament
due to fatigue.
He cited
the limited recovery time and the potential risk to his physical condition as
reasons for his decision, especially considering he still needs to prepare for
the ATP Finals. In the Finals, he is the 4th seed and will carry the hopes of
the local crowd in Turin.
“I am sorry
to announce that I am withdrawing from today's match in Bercy. I finished the
match when it was almost 3 in the morning and didn't go to bed until a few
hours later. I had less than 12 hours to rest and prepare for the next game,”
Sinner wrote on his Twitter account.
“I have to
make the right decision for my health and my body. The weeks ahead with the ATP
Finals at home and the Davis Cup will be very important, now I focus on
preparing for these important events. See you in Turin! Force!,” world No. 4
added.
