Novak
Djokovic surpassed
Rafael Nadal in the number of matches played on the ATP Tour
after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry by 6-3, 6-2 in the 2023 Paris Masters.
The World
No. 1 has shown that, at 36 years old, he remains competitive in all the
tournaments he plays. He has won three Grand Slams this year and boasts a 47-5
record in 2023, despite participating in only 11 tournaments thus far.
With his
victory in the first round of the Paris-Bercy, the Serbian reached a total of
1,289 matches played in his career since his debut in 2003. This incredible
journey includes 96 titles, 24 of them in Grand Slams, and earnings of over
$175 million, a record for any tennis player of all time.
This
achievement propelled him to the fourth spot among the tennis players with the
most matches played, surpassing his great rival Rafael Nadal, who stands at
1,288 matches since his debut in 2001 with 1068-220 record.
Djokovic
doesn't appear to be contemplating retirement anytime soon and may continue
climbing the list. The closest player ahead is Ivan Lendl, who totaled 1,310
matches in his 17-year career, which means Djokovic is just 21 matches behind.
However,
advancing further among the players with the most matches played would be a
more challenging feat for Djokovic. Roger Federer, in the second place, has
more than 200 matches on Lendl, and the top spot belongs to Jimmy Connors, who
boasts over 1,550 matches in his career. Here is the list of players with the
most matches played in their careers:
