Alexander Zverev dodged a bullet against Wawrinka who nearly won the 2nd set to advance to the Paris Masters semifinal.
It wasn't a pretty win for Zverev who nearly lost the 2nd set but it was enough against Wawrinka whom he defeated 6-3 7-6(1). The opening set was a quick affair where Zverev simply played better. The German served very well except for one game and Wawrinka had little to no chances on his serve. Zverev took the early lead but Wawrinka came back to break him as well. But an abysmal rate of hitting his first serve cost him another break and Zverev started rolling. Even when Wawrinka returned the serve he didn't have much chance as Zverev took over quickly and early. He would add another break in the final game of the opening set to win it 6-3.
The 2nd set was a set that Wawrinka initially played much better than the first. His serving improved and Zverev started to make more and more mistakes. All of that gave Wawrinka the chance to break Zverev which he did. He would maintain that lead throughout the set but his play was slowly deteriorating. Ultimately at 5-4 he had a 30-00 lead in the game and was only two points away from the set but he could not get them. Zverev won the game and made it 5-5. Stan's game was good if he hit a strong serve but if he didn't Zverev usually won the rally. That is what happened in the tiebreak. The Swiss player could not hit a proper serve to save his life and Zverev easily won the tiebreak 7-1.
