Alexander Zverev has his first top 10 win of the season and in the process continued his winning run at the Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open). He downed Daniil Medvedev in the process who he had lost his last four matches against.
In windy conditions, Zverev thrived producing at key moments. He saved break points at 4-4 and broke in the very next game after a back and forth contest taking it 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in just over two and a half hours.
He hit 49 errors to 25 of Medvedev but prevailed on the winners' count with 26 more than his opponent sitting at 36-13, with that decisive break proving vital in the third set.
It is now eight wins in a row for Zverev in Cincinnati having won back in 2021 and not playing last year due to the horrific injury he suffered at Roland Garros.
It will now be Mackenzie McDonald or Adrian Mannarino for Zverev who is chasing a second title of the season and sixth overall on the ATP Masters 1000 series in his career.
"It was very difficult conditions against a very difficult opponent," Zverev said. "He gives you nothing and you have to win the match yourself and that is what I did today and I am pleased with that.
"I tried to be patient and you just have to take your chances, your opportunities. You are not going to get many because we were both serving quite well. I lost three very tight matches earlier this year, so I am pleased to have finally won one today."
