Alexander Zverev returned to winning ways in Monte-Carlo by defeating Federico Delbonis 6-1 7-5 to move on to round 3.
Alexander Zverev did not enjoy a very good stay in the Principality last year but he returned to winning ways against Delbonis. The Argentinian is a very tricky clay player yet Zverev has always been a very dominant player against lefty tennis players such as Delobnis. It might have to do with his brother being a lefty as well so he had a lot of practice.
That familiarity was certainly on display early on in this match as Zverev easily cruised past Delbonis to the 6-1 finish. The German was on fire and everything he did worked perfectly. Delbonis did not know what to do but he started off much better in the 2nd set jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Somewhat carelessly he threw it away not long after that.
Despite breaking back to 2-2, Zverev lost his serve once more 2-4 before battling back once more and making it 5-4. That's when Zverev had his first match point which he didn't use. Delbonis prolonged the match a bit more but ultimately Zverev was able to take the 6-5 lead and finish off the match with 7-5. He converted his 3rd match point.
