Alexander Zverev was fined $40,000 by the men’s professional tennis tour and will forfeit more than $30,000 in prize money and all rankings points from the Mexican Open.
Alexander Zverev had a highly problematic outburst during his double match at the Acapulco Open earlier this week when he broke his racquet on the umpire chair nearly hurting the umpire. The incident was widely condemned in the tennis world with Zverev himself issuing a statement apologizing for the incident calling it unacceptable.
The ATP said Zverev was fined $20,000 each for verbal abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct, the maximum penalty for each violation. He loses his full prize money for singles and doubles of $31,570 and all rankings points earned at the tournament. The German is not suspended as of now but the ATP announced Thursday it would undertake “a further review of the incident.”
Whether that additional investigation yields a suspension remains to be seen but the German has two open investigations at the moment with an ongoing ATP investigation into domestic violence still not concluded.
