Alexander Zverev found himself in the next round of
Roland Garros following a spectacular match and victory over Herbert.
Alexander Zverev had a great performance Wednesday against Herbert to reach the next round of Roland Garros but the German would have preferred the victory to come in three sets. The Frenchman came out inspired serving well and playing well. He caught Zverev off guard and won the 1st set with 6-2. The 2nd set brought much better play from Zverev who ultimately won the 2nd set with 6-4.
The 3rd set was a proper battle with both player's serving and playing well. Neither could find a crack in the armour of the other so we ended up in the tiebreak. In it was the German who proved more composed as he won it with 7-5. It seemed like the German finally found a way to frustrate Herbert and his inspired performance would come to an end.
Not quite. The Frenchman came out even better and stronger in the 4th breaking Zverev twice in the early goings of the set to take a 4-1 lead. Zverev pulled one back but Herbert held on to win the set 6-4. In the 5th one, Herbert completely crumbled possibly due to exhaustion and tiredness. Zverev moved better and his shots were sharper. The final set was a dramatic one, as Zverev took an early lead 3-0 but Herbert fought back to make it 3-3. Zverev once again took the lead with 5-3 and even served for the match but Herbert broke him again to make it 5-4. It seemed like the match would never end but Zverev finally said enough is enough and he won the next game to win it 6-4.
A spectacular match and a spectacular win by Zverev against a player who played strong and inspired tennis and never gave up.
