Alexander Zverev took down Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 3-6 6-2 to advance to the Madrid Open final where Carlos Alcaraz awaits.
It was nowhere near as intense as the first semifinal today but the German was able to secure another final in Madrid with a chance to defend his trophy from last year. Madrid is a special place for Zverev who triumphed here twice and he named the event one of his favourites. This match was an interesting one, to say the least.
Both opened well and we did not see too much excitement. Neither allowed much on their serves early on and both looked dominant. Zverev was a bit sharper and generally played a superbly high level of tennis that ultimately got him the break and 1st set 6-4. The 2nd set opened well for Zverev once again but the German suffered a bit of a letdown later on.
Some serving woes, some bad backhand misses and Tsitsipas got a break that he held for the 6-3 2nd set victory. It seemed like we would get a hugely competitive final set but it was anything but that. Tsitsipas complicated things early missing a few balls and giving Zverev a chance. He started playing like in the first set again and he got the break. Then he continued applying pressure adding another one later on for the 6-2 finish.
