During the first day of play of Andre Agassi Group at the ATP Finals, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev dealt with Rafael Nadal.
The day started with a match between two youngsters. The
US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev faced 2018 Next Gen
ATP Finals champion
Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Only one break point opportunity occurred in the first set, as the Greek led on Medvedev's service game in the second game. From that moment, both players held their serves and so tie-break needed to decide the first set. In the tie-break, Tsitsipas was winning from the beginning not allowing his opponent to turn things around.
After 55 minutes Tsitsipas won the first set 7-5 in a tie-break and began the second, hoping for another success. Both players held their service games for a long time again, until Tsitsipas broke Medvedev's serve in the 9th game and confirmed his victory in the 10th.
The next match featured
world number one Rafael Nadal and 2018 ATP Finals champion
Alexander Zverev. The German was hoping for a quick start in order to be able to defend the last year's title.
And so he did begin quickly. Nadal led 2-1 in the first set with both players holding their service games, but since that moment, Zverev won 7 games in a row to win the first set 6-2 and get the lead 2-0 in the second. Nadal was later not able to turn it as he did not have a single break point during the match. And so after the first day, Zverev and Tsitsipas lead the Andre Agassi Group with one point.
