Alexander
Zverev joined former world No. 1
Lleyton Hewitt in criticizing the current
format of the Davis Cup.
The
26-year-old German tennis player expressed his disagreement with the current
Davis Cup format. In recent years, it was decided that the tournament would be
played in a single-host venue, where the 16 countries in the World Group
compete for two spots in each group of 4 countries. The matches consist of
three rubbers: two singles and one doubles, all played as best-of-three sets.
The
qualifiers then proceed to the Davis Cup Finals with a knockout format of
quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals during the same week. This format
recently led Italy to the title by defeating Australia 2-0 in the decisive tie.
Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt had also criticized the current single-host
format.
"Malaga
has put on a great event, in terms of what they can do with the format that
they've got — their hands are tied,” he said.
“There's no
home-and-away and there's no [best of] five sets, so it's not ideal. We are
playing on a surface that I'm really sick of playing on, to be honest. That's
not what Davis Cup is about – it's playing on clay, grass, outdoor elements,”
Hewitt added.
It's
obviously pretty frustrating, I think, that we don't get all the different
surfaces and conditions throughout Davis Cup anymore, and especially in the big
matches, as well,"
Former
world No. 2
Alexander Zverev agreed with Hewitt and joined the criticisms
regarding the changes in the format of the Davis Cup, particularly considering
the tradition of the tournament:
"When
is the sport of tennis and the federations of our sport finally going to listen
to us players and even more importantly to the living legends of our sport who
used to give their absolute everything for the Davis Cup and what it used to
stand for.
The Davis
Cup is one of the most historic events in not only tennis but sports in
general. Bring back the real Davis Cup," Zverev wrote in a message posted
on his Instagram Story.
