Taylor Fritz has opened the ATP Finals with a superb statement display to see off Daniil Medvedev in a 6-4, 6-3 win in his second appearance in Turin.
Fritz is part of the Ilie Nastase group with top seed Jannik Sinner as well as Alex de Minaur who are set to clash on Sunday evening. The former is favourite for the title and will look to yield some of that onto the debutant. While De Minaur has settled into qualifying after a near heartbreak.
He was all set at Wimbledon before injuring himself on a return at the net against Arthur Fils. He had to withdraw from the tournament afterwards and barely played after before having to claw himself into position in a last gasp bid.
While Fritz qualified before Paris with Medvedev who he defeated on Sunday with the Russian qualifying quite early on. He made a perfect start capitalising on a pretty error strewn opening set from Medvedev in which he hit seven double faults.
But he pulled clear in the second also with a more emphatic second set sealing the deal with Medvedev unable to realistically return any sort of retort amid the barrage from the American who produced a near perfect display. Their Head to Head now sits at 1-1 between them while Fritz leads the group at this early stage.
As ever with Round Robin, winners face each other and so do losers and vice versa so an early meeting with Jannik Sinner could tantalise the taste buds in Turin.
