Iga Swiatek made a strong debut by defeating Katerina Siniakova (No. 46) 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the second round of the Australian Open. The world No. 2 started her campaign in Melbourne in fine form, showcasing her credentials as a title contender.

The Polish star has a chance to reclaim the top spot in the rankings if she wins the title—or makes a deep run while Aryna Sabalenka suffers an early exit. The 5-time Grand Slam champion displayed a solid serve performance to secure victory against a good opponent like the Czech player.

In the first set, both players held their service games without major issues until the sixth game, where Swiatek capitalised on her first break opportunity. Although Siniakova broke back immediately, narrowing the gap to 3-4, Swiatek took control of the key points during pressure moments. Swiatek clinched the set 6-3, serving at 69% with a 73% win rate on her first serve. Her superior play kept her ahead throughout the set.

Building on her momentum, Swiatek opened the second set by winning four consecutive games, taking the lead and seemingly sealing the match. However, Siniakova showed resilience, breaking back to level the score at 3-3.

Just when a comeback seemed possible, Siniakova committed several unforced errors and visibly displayed her frustration as Swiatek secured another break to move ahead 4-3. With minimal resistance, the world No. 2 closed out the match at 6-3, 6-4 against the world No. 46.

Swiatek now faces Rebecca Sramkova (No. 49) in the second round. The Slovak recently defeated Katie Volynets (No. 60) and played a crucial role in leading her nation to an unprecedented Billie Jean King Cup Finals appearance, securing victories over Katie Boulter and Danielle Collins along the way.
