United Cup 2025: Terrific Taylor Fritz sends Team USA into semi-finals as Sydney flight awaits

Team USA will be heading to Sydney for the semi-finals of the 2025 United Cup with Taylor Fritz sending his country into a tie against either Italy or Czech Republic on Saturday.

Fritz took down Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-4 to add to Coco Gauff's tough win over 7-5, 6-2 win over Zhang Shuai. But while there is still doubles to come, the semi-finals await for Team USA having sealed the tie with one match to go.

Having faced some adversity earlier in the week, Team USA have found their footing and unlike Germany and Australia for instance have lived up to their status as the team to beat as they aim to reclaim the title they won back in 2023.

Sealing the win in just over an hour and 17 minutes, it was as the scoreline suggests a tie of two breaks in the two sets as Fritz missed chances to go 3-2 up with three break chances spurned before he finally got over the line. He then had set points as Zhang went 5-4 down before he finally edged over the line in the opener.

The second was a lot more straight forward down both ends of the court. Zhang suffered one break as Fritz went 4-3 up. While aside from that no other break points were brought up and barely a flicker was registered on each of their service games in favour of the other player.

But it has been a good week for China despite defeat with their leading player in Zheng QInwen of course out and not playing now until the Australian Open. She was a late withdrawal and they have done well in her place. But in reality, the USA tandem of Gauff and Fritz continue to be tough to beat as was proven again.
