Garbiñe
Muguruza recently stated that she has no intentions of returning to tennis at
the moment.
The former
world No. 1 has not competed since January of this year at the Lyon Open, where
she was eliminated in the first round by the young Linda Noskova. Muguruza
experienced a consistent decline in her performance starting in the 2022
season.
In 2021,
Garbiñe Muguruza was the champion of the WTA Finals, and it appeared that in
2022, she was poised for a stronger comeback to contend for the top ranking.
However, in 2022, her record was a disappointing 12-17, meaning she won only
41% of the matches she played, and in 2023, she lost all four matches she
participated in.
Muguruza
decided to step away from tennis due to the consecutive poor results, in the
hope of taking a break and returning stronger. However, after almost 10 months
of hiatus, the two-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she has no plans to
return to tennis at this time, although she admitted that she is only focused
on the short term:
"As of
today, I have no intention. My plan right now is to sleep, rest, be with my
loved ones, and make up for lost time... I don't see beyond what I am doing
today, tomorrow, and this week."
Nonetheless,
she disclosed that she is still keeping up with physical training, but she is
engaging in different activities beyond tennis:
"My
physical shape has changed because, without being in competition, I try to stay
fit without the need for intense training. I regularly go to the gym, several
times a week," she commented.
"I
love weight training, complement my cardio with Zumba, Pilates, yoga, boxing
classes... I take advantage of the opportunity to do all those things that I
didn't have time for when I was training for tennis," Muguruza added.
