The 2025 tennis calendar is in full swing now and fans across the globe are gearing up for more clay court action as Roland Garros qualification will begin in the next couple of days, and as is the usual case at this time of year the French Open is always good for a few stories, and Nick Kyrgios is back in the headlines again.
It has been a poor couple of years by his own inconsistent and entertaining standards, but whether you love him or loathe him, he is a fan favourite and the truth is that we just have not seen enough of him in recent times as he has been dogged by a series of foot, knee and wrist injuries in recent seasons, and he has only played four singles matches across the year so far.
Having not featured at Roland Garros since way back in 2017 it had naturally been assumed that he would skip the competition once again this summer as the 30 year old focused in on his return to full fitness and rehabilitation, however it has now been confirmed that the Australian will make a surprise appearance at the tournament as he has agreed to team up with fellow Aussie Jordan Thompson for the men's doubles, so he will be a late entry onto the Betway odds being offered for this years competition.
Having confirmed that he originally planned on skipping Paris this year, his change of mind came as regular partner Max Purcell was handed a backdated 18 month doping ban leaving Thompson in the lurch, so he accepted the invitation to make his first appearance in the last eight years with the aim of 'having a bit of fun'.
It should be a good warm up for Kyrgios as the expectation was that he would make a full return to his singles career in time for the much loved Wimbledon tournament where he would dearly like to make the final once again on the hallowed grass.
Kyrgios has played with Thompson previously in his career and they last played together at the French Open back in 2017 where they progressed through to the third round of the competition.
His return will undoubtedly be a boost to attending fans in Paris given his talent and firebrand nature and doubles does more naturally lend itself to a bit of an exhibitional experience, so his involvement will be a bonus for all.
As will news that former champion Stan Wawrinka has been handed a wildcard entry for the singles draw. The now 40 year old may have dropped down to 132nd in the ATP rankings in recent years, but there will definitely be those fans who look forward to seeing him on the clay again as it was only a decade ago that he defeated Novak Djokovic across four sets to lift the trophy and notch up his second of three Grand Slam titles.
The Swiss player reached round two in 2024 where he lost to Russia's Pavel Kotov, and fans will also have a chance to say goodbye to Frenchman Richard Gasquet as the 38 year old has announced that he will officially retire following the competition. He has also been granted a wildcard entry for the main draw. The 2025 French Open runs from May 25 to June 8.
