Before of course claiming the US Open and living up to her promise, despite that an injury at the WTA Finals at the back end of last year has derailed the momentum for Andreescu.
"I stepped weirdly on a return. I heard my knee crack. It kind of went inwards...At some point an athlete has to say 'stop' and just listen to their body. that's what I did," Andreescu said after the injury.
While there was small setbacks at the start of the year such as having to pull out of early season events such as the ASB Classic in Auckland and even the Fed Cup where she travelled but didn't play, many wouldn't have expected her to be out for this long.
This frustration was confounded when she pulled out of Indian Wells earlier this week which is irrelevant now due to the Coronavirus paying heed to the event but still it shows striking a balance for such a heralded player.
"It's been a long road to recovery, and while I was looking forward to...defending my title at Indian Wells, unfortunately I'm still not 100 percent."
Many players would return often straight away, but for Andreescu it is all about returning when she is 100 percent and while the current situation in Tennis helps her, she will have to return soon or it could be an even long road back.
