The schedule has been confirmed for Day Two of the 2023 US Open, with Venus Williams set to star on Arthur Ashe, following Daniil Medvedev and Jessica Pegula.
Ons Jabeur, Jannik Sinner, and Andy Murray will be among the players starting their US Open campaigns on Day Two, Tuesday, August 29, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
ATP world No. 3 Medvedev will be the first to take to the main court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where he is predicted to defeat Attila Balazs to progress through to the second round.
He will be followed by WTA world No. 3 Pegula, who will be facing Camilla Giorgi. Although the American is expected to secure this win without too much difficulty, Giorgi achieved a surprise win over 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu at the Canadian Open earlier this month, suggesting that she is likely to try and put up a fight against Pegula.
Closing out the day on Arthur Ashe will be tennis legend Venus Williams, who received a wild card for the tournament and will face qualifier Greet Minnen in her opening match. The 43-year-old won two of her seven Grand Slam singles titles at the US Open, both of which were over two decades ago in 2000 and 2001, highlighting her incredible longevity in the sport.
Meanwhile, fifth seed and 2022 US Open runner-up Jabeur will face Camila Osorio in her first-round match on the court in Louis Armstrong Stadium. The Tunisian player also reached the final of Wimbledon last month but suffered an agonizing defeat to Marketa Vondrousova, leading her to finish as runner-up at the grasscourt major for the second consecutive year.
Sixth seed Sinner will also start his campaign at Louis Armstrong Stadium, where he will face Yannick Hanfmann. The Italian won his first ATP Masters 1000 title win at the recent Canadian Open, potentially giving him the confidence to make a run at a maiden Grand Slam title.
Furthermore, John Isner will start his final tournament on this court, where he will face Facundo Diaz Acosta. The American announced earlier this week that he would be retiring from the sport after the US Open.
Over on Grandstand, 2012 US Open champion Murray will be starting his run against Frenchman Corentin Moutet. The Brit is not likely to win the Slam, but will certainly be hoping to make the second week following a disappointing Wimbledon run where he lost to world No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas.
2016 US Open champion Stan Wawrinka will also be playing on the court on Day Two, facing Yoshihito Nishioka. The Swiss player currently leads their head-to-head 1-0, but the players' only meeting was at the 2017 Indian Wells, so it will be interesting to see what, if anything, has changed in the last six years.
Grandstand will also feature 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, who will face 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Canadian player will be looking for some of the form and momentum that saw her finish as runner-up two years ago. Fernandez may be helped by the lack of pressure this year in comparison to 2022, when she had over a thousand WTA ranking points to defend.
Tennis couple Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils will both be playing their respective matches on Day Two over on Court 17. Svitolina will be first, as the 26th seed is set to face Anna-Lena Friedsam, who she has never played before.
The Ukrainian will be immediately followed by her French tennis player husband Monfils, who will be playing against qualifier Taro Daniel. Monfils leads their head-to-head 1-0, but they have never faced each other on the hard-court surface.
Also on Court 17 will be reigning Wimbledon champion and ninth seed Vondrousova, who will face South Korea's Na-Lae Han. However, starting off the day on the court will be twelfth seed Alexander Zverev, who will play his first match against Australia's Aleksandar Vukic.
Elsewhere, seventh seed Caroline Garcia will face Yafan Wang on Court 5 before eighth seed Andrey Rublev plays against Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori. Over on Court 6, 13th seed Daria Kasatkina will face American player Alycia Parks.
