Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Navarro who both boast connections to New York City were the victors on Wednesday evening inside the iconic Madison Square Garden as The Garden Cup took place.
Navarro albeit lives in Charleston, North Carolina now which is more like home was born in New York City and took to the court on home turf also only months after her Grand Slam best run to face another player who had her best run in the city in Jessica Pegula.
Pegula reached the US Open final across the river in Queens but it was Navarro who was the Queen of New York as she won 7-6, 7-5 in their exhibition match. The latter has not been seen on court for sometime having snubbed the chance to be an alternate for the WTA Finals and deciding to end her season after failing to qualify.
But she has been back in training as per her Instagram for a few weeks gearing up for the new season. After ascending to new heights in 2024, it can only be a good sign that she managed to beat Pegula albeit in an exhibition.
It was a match though that brought joy for both. “Brings back so many good memories, so many emotions,” said Pegula on Tennis Channel. “I can’t believe we’re here at the Garden, playing tennis. It’s so cool.”
Jessica Pegula also spoke about trying to embody Carlos Alcaraz with some of her shots. But while she was defeated, the Spaniard sealed the win in his match against Ben Shelton.
He followed Navarro's win with a 4-6, 6-2, (1-0) win over Shelton who was on home soil but couldn't defeat the former US Open champion.
Of course happy memories for the Spaniard as he ascended to the top of the game for the first time and playing in such an iconic venue, it was all about making others smile and enjoy watching him play. As opposed to being hell bent on the win.
“I’m trying to make the people enjoy watching tennis,” Alcaraz said with a smile afterward. “I hope the people enjoyed the match, and that’s what I try to do every time.”
