It was a weekend of fun and games at the Tordinci Elementary School in Croatia, as several of the nation's top tennis players, led by Marin Cilic, showed up to participate in a football match.
The 2014
US Open champion used his foundation, the Marin Cilic Foundation, to organize Game Set Croatia last June. This initiative was able to raise funds to build a multi-functional sports playground for children from the elementary school, which lacked both an indoor gymnasium and an outdoor playground.
On Saturday, several Croatian tennis players showed up at the school to join 120 of its schoolchildren for a football match. The game was played on the playground that was constructed with the raised funds. Besides Cilic,
Borna Coric, Ivan Dodig, Nikola Mektic, Mate Pavic, Franko Skugor, Ana Konjuh and
Donna Vekic were among the players in attendance.
“I had a great time with the kids and I think my fellow tennis players feel the same,” Cilic said. “It was fun to swap out tennis for some football.”
This was the first playground funded by the Marin Cilic Foundation and it's team hopes to continue work on similar projects. The organization believes that every child have access to sport and play facilities.
Since it's inception, the Foundation has impacted more than 1,000 children through its projects. Some of it's endeavors include awarding 37 scholarships to young athletes and classical musicians. Additionally, it has helped renovate four school laboratories in Croatia and organizes a free annual tennis camp for children in the area of Vukovar.
“I hope this new playground will provide healthy, fun and wonderful memories for the kids from this area,” Cilic said. “Hopefully many of them will discover their love for sport here.”
