Pretty much any tennis fans remember the magical run in 2009 which saw Clijsters crowned the US Open champion. She only just returned back from retirement and it was only her 3rd tournament back. She received a wild card, she was unranked but at the end of those 14 days, it was the 26-year old Belgian standing with the trophy. Now, many years later, at age 37 she aims to repeat that feat:
“It’s more a drive within me, where I know where I want to get to. And that’s what has been the motivation for this because I feel like I can still play some really good tennis. That’s what gave me the push to go for it. If I didn’t have that confidence that I could still play good tennis, then I would have never started this. I know I still have good tennis left in me.”
Her preparation for the US Open should have included an appearance at the Western & Southern Open but an abdominal injury prevented her from participating. She chose to heal up and prepare for the grand slam as best she could. When asked about the fact that there will be no fans attending she said:
“It’s going to be strange with no fans, and I’ve always enjoyed playing in front of a crowd, especially those night matches at the US Open, where there is such a different energy. But it’s still going to be a tennis match, and you’re still going to have your coach and somebody there to support you.”
The US Open is set to being on the 31st of August 2020.
