Kim Clijsters returned to the courts on Monday playing in the World Team Tennis competition and it was good vibes and all smiles.
When
Kim Clijsters announced she would take part in the
World Team Tennis competition everyone was excited. She became part of the New York Empire team and on Monday she finally stepped onto the court. Her opponent was Bernarda Para of Washington whom she defeated. On Wednesday she played a huge role in New York Empire defeating Philadelphia.
In that match, she even defeated the reigning
Australian Open Champion
Sofia Kenin in a vintage display. She served great, her baseline consistency was impeccable and she moved really well. New York coach Luke Jensen said:
“She’s brought her team here. She’s into it. There’s a reason why she’s back playing professional tennis. There’s a desire in there before that window closes to say I want to give it one more shot. Now she’s just proven herself in WTT against the No. 4 player in the world.”
Another veteran who's played many times against Kim,
Mattek-Sands said:
“She’s a winner, she’s a gamer, she’s going to rip the ball,” Mattek-Sands said. “I’m excited to play against her.”’
What has been particularly striking in her return to the courts was the optimist and positivity. While she was always a positive competitor Clijsters admitted that as a mother of three not all is always great. "It's been tough but you have to have patience."
