Swiatek back to work: Hits Montreal courts ahead of Canadian Open
Iga Swiatek is already back on the practice courts after a brief rest following her Wimbledon title win. In a video shared on the
Canadian Open's social media, Swiatek is seen training. The six-time Grand Slam champion decided to take a few days off after winning the All England Club title by an historic 6-0, 6-0 scoreline against Amanda Anisimova in the final. The Pole arrives inspired and as the second seed at the Canadian Open, seeking a new title and brimming with confidence after breaking a more than year-long title drought.
The Pole is in Montreal to compete in the sixth WTA 1000 event of the year, where she is still waiting to find out her opponent between Yulia Putintseva and Hanya Guo (Q), who will face each other early this week. Swiatek is not defending any points this time, having missed the tournament in 2024 due due to injury. Her best performance to date was in 2023, where she fell in the semifinals.
Wozniacki welcomes third child: Max Wozniacki Lee
Caroline Wozniacki announced the birth of her third child with husband David Lee in a social media post. The former world No. 1 shared a photo of her newborn son, Max, on Saturday, July 26th, alongside her older children, Olivia and James. The former Australian Open champion had retired from the courts back in 2020 to start a family, remaining away from competition for three and a half years, a period during which she had her children Olivia and James.
However, in the second half of 2023, Wozniacki announced her return to the courts – and at a good level – achieving a strong performance at the US Open (reaching the Round of 16) and then competing regularly throughout 2024, even reaching quarterfinals at Indian Wells and the Bad Homburg Open, among her best results of the year. However, during her vacation period, she announced she was pregnant again, stepping away from the courts once more, though without clarity on whether this will be a definitive retirement or if she plans to return to competition in the future. For now, the 35-year-old Dane joyfully shares the welcome of the new addition to her family.
Kalinskaya celebrates DC Open final berth with beloved dog Bella
Anna Kalinskaya shared a tender moment with her dog Bella after reaching the DC Open final. The Russian tennis player secured a notable victory against former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the semifinals, defeating her in straight sets, as she continues to advance in the tournament without dropping a set.
The 26-year-old player will receive a significant boost in her ranking and will seek her first professional title this Sunday. A year ago, she reached her first two finals at the WTA 1000 Dubai and the WTA 500 Berlin Ladies Open, both resulting in defeats, leaving her still without WTA titles. She will have her opportunity this Sunday against Canadian Leylah Fernandez, who survived a tough battle against Elena Rybakina in the semifinals.
Fernandez reaches 7th career final at DC Open
Canadian Leylah Fernandez celebrated her return to a WTA final, the seventh of her career, where she will seek her fourth title overall and first at a WTA 500 level. The former US Open runner-up won a true battle against former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, after surviving a match that featured three tie-breaks and where Rybakina served for the victory in the second set, but Fernandez managed to stage a comeback to reach her first final of the season.
The Canadian is currently ranked world No. 27 and has the chance to advance several more positions to No. 24 if she defeats Kalinskaya in Sunday's final. They have only one previous encounter, which was at the Guadalajara Open 2021 – when both had a different reality, far from the major spotlights of the tennis world – and which ended in a three-set victory for Fernandez.
