Daily Dose of Social Media, we spotlight the most notable activities and moments from ATP and WTA players.
Jannik Sinner stole the spotlight at Milan Fashion Week, while
Nick Kyrgios took to social media once again to criticise the world No. 1.
As the
Laver Cup kicks off, local hero Angelique Kerber participated in the night session coin toss and also mingled with
Ana Ivanovic in the audience. Meanwhile,
Maria Sharapova captured attention during her meeting with David Beckham in New York, and
Holger Rune weighed in on the tennis GOAT debate.
Sharapova
and Beckham join forces in New York
Former
World No. 1 Maria Sharapova reunited with David Beckham at an event hosted by
one of their shared sponsors, Stella Artois, in New York. Alongside the former
footballer, Sharapova is an ambassador for the brand. The event was also
attended by singer Ludacris, actor Matt Damon, and American YouTuber Sean
Evans.
Both
Sharapova and Beckham are prime examples of athletes who successfully
transitioned into the world of fashion. This isn’t the first time the two have
shared the spotlight, as the 5-time Grand Slam champion attended an event for
Beckham’s wife, Victoria Beckham Womenswear, just a few months ago at Paris
Fashion Week.
Jannik
Sinner leads the way at Milan Fashion Week 2024
Jannik
Sinner took centre stage at Milan Fashion Week 2024, following in the footsteps
of fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini on the runway. The World No. 1 was front
row at Gucci’s show on Friday, September 20.
Sinner, who
has been sponsored by Gucci since 2022, wore a look styled by Sabato De Sarno.
The 2-time Grand Slam champion sported slim trousers and a boxy jacket with
patch pockets, paired with white Nike Air Force 1 trainers. At the event,
Sinner posed with notable figures such as Anna Wintour, Kirsten Dunst, Sveva
Alviti, and BTS’s Jin.
These are
Sinner’s last days in Italy before heading to the China Open next week as the
Asian swing kicks off. The Italian will first compete at the ATP 500 Beijing
Open, followed by the Shanghai Masters, the penultimate Masters 1000 of the
season.
Nick
Kyrgios reacts to Jannik Sinner’s Milan Fashion Week photos
Australian
tennis player Nick Kyrgios reacted to photos of Jannik Sinner at Milan Fashion
Week. Kyrgios was among the most vocal critics after news of Sinner’s positive
doping test, which occurred in March at Indian Wells, became public in August,
just days before the US Open.
The 2022
Wimbledon runner-up expressed his belief that Sinner was treated differently
compared to other players who have faced suspensions, despite Sinner being
later declared innocent. In the Italian’s case, there was no suspension, and
the doping incident only became public in August, when his innocence was
proven.
A Twitter
user shared a post featuring Sinner at a Gucci fashion show, with the caption:
“Let’s just pretend the failed drug tests never happened and it’s business as
usual? 🤦🏽”
Kyrgios
reacted to the post, mocking Sinner by sarcastically referring to him as a
‘victim’ along with a laughing emoji: “Yeah, of course – nothing happened bro 🤣 he’s the victim,” Kyrgios wrote.
Angelique
Kerber joins Laver Cup activities in Berlin
Angelique
Kerber, former World No. 1 and 3-time Grand Slam champion, took part in the
Laver Cup activities currently being held in Berlin, sharing some photos on
social media. Kerber, who recently retired after a first-round loss to Yulia
Putintseva at Wimbledon, has not completely stepped away from tennis.
The German
tennis icon was actively involved in the start of the Laver Cup, receiving an
ovation from the crowd at Central Court. She also had the honour of tossing the
coin for the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Alejandro Tabilo during the
night session. The 36-year-old former player was later photographed with Ana
Ivanovic.
Wozniacki enjoys
MLS football in St. Louis
Caroline
Wozniacki is spending time in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended an MLS football
match with her husband, former NBA player David Lee. The Danish tennis star
decided to skip the Asian Swing to share some family moments in the American
city where her husband was born.
Since
returning to the tour a year ago, the 34-year-old has missed several
tournaments, frequently mentioning her efforts to balance family life with her
tennis career. Earlier this season, Wozniacki also opted out of the Middle East
Swing in February.
Her most
recent appearance was at the US Open, where she reached the Round of 16 before
being eliminated by 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia. Wozniacki has participated
in just 12 tournaments this season (with a 15-12 record), currently holding a
World No. 72 ranking. Despite this, the former World No. 1 has shown she
remains at a high level, with victories over players like Leylah Fernandez,
Elina Svitolina, and Donna Vekic.
"Who
is the GOAT?" – Holger Rune weighs in on the Big-3 debate
Holger Rune
took part in a new ATP Tour interview on social media, alongside content
creator Sharku, as he awaits his debut in the Asian-swing. The former world No.
5 chose Gael Monfils as the "nicest player": “It’s such a funny guy,”
while the most underrated player, in the Dane’s opinion, is
Daniil Medvedev: “I
mean, he’s not underrated because he won a Grand Slam, but his game is so
difficult to play,” Rune stated.
In another
question, Rune had to choose the GOAT, and he named the Big 3: Federer, Nadal,
and Djokovic. However, when the interviewer pressed further, Rune admitted
that, in his opinion,
Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time.
"Who
should’ve won more titles on the Tour?" Sharku asked later. "I think
Andy Murray should’ve won more Grand Slam titles," commented the former
Paris Masters champion.
Tsitsipas
and Medvedev Channel Their Inner Spiderman
Stefanos
Tsitsipas shared a fun photo on social media alongside Daniil Medvedev during
the Laver Cup. The Greek and the Russian are teaming up for Team Europe for the
second time, having previously competed together in the 2021 tournament, where
they secured a comfortable 14-1 victory over Team World.
Tsitsipas
made his debut in the morning session with a straightforward win against
Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-1, 6-4), while Medvedev is set to debut on Saturday, with
his opponent yet to be confirmed. In the afternoon, Medvedev and Tsitsipas
posed for a photo, jokingly recreating a popular meme of two Spidermen pointing
at each other: “How did we do, @DaniilMedved? 👉👈”
captioned Tsitsipas.
