Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou believes that the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal bring similar kind of excitement for fans like the former world number one Serena Williams used to do.
All three of those players are rated among the greatest players in the history of the sport. While Serena retired from tennis in 2022 but Djokovic and Nadal is still playing at the highest level.
Mouratoglou was recently quoted in a report where he stated that both Djokovic and Nadal excite tennis fans similarly like Serena used to do while playing on the court.
"I think every sport needs superstars,” he said. “Superstars go beyond the sport, bring new fans. They fill up the stadium, and I think it's very important. I remember when Serena was playing.
"The excitement around it, of course, is the same now with Novak and with Rafa, who unfortunately couldn't play. It brings a lot of attention. But I think it's exciting to have both superstars and also young players coming up, it's not great if the champions always win. There has to be some suspense and uncertainty.
"The ideal situation at the moment, I think we have it because Novak is still at the top. Rafa, we'll see, but on clay, for sure, he will be the guy to beat. And you have young players coming up, who are very dangerous. There is this tension that I think that every sport needs."
Serena ended her illustrious career after having won 23 Grand Slam titles in the singles category which was the most by a women’s player. Spain’s tennis star Nadal, in the singles category, has won 22 Grand Slam titles, the second-most by a men’s player in the history of the sport.
Djokovic has won the most Grand Slams in the history of men’s singles tennis. He lifted major titles 24 times.
