Alexander
Zverev commented on
Holger Rune's recent partnership with
Boris Becker as a
coach.
The World
No. 7 concluded the season at the ATP Finals, where he qualified after reaching
the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters, in his sixth appearance in the year-end
tournament. The German was drawn in the Red Group, and despite securing two
victories (over Alcaraz and Rublev), it was not enough to advance to the
semifinals, leading to his elimination in the round-robin stage.
Another
participant in the ATP Finals was World No. 8 Holger Rune, who waited until the
last moment to confirm his participation after some inconsistent months since
the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Less than a month ago, the Dane began a
partnership with former World No. 1 Boris Becker as his coach, shortly after
Rune parted ways with Patrick Mouratoglou.
It seems
that Becker had a positive influence on Rune, who managed to improve his
performance in the last few weeks with a semifinal appearance at the Swiss Open
and reaching the quarterfinals of the Paris-Bercy, showcasing a high level
despite the losses in the Finals:
Alexander
Zverev expressed the opinion that his compatriot's work could benefit the young
star significantly and ruled out the possibility of working with Becker for the
time being:
"He's
just a tennis expert. He understands tennis, he knows what it means to be at
the top, he knows how to get there. I think he can help Holger a lot too,"
“That won't
happen in the near future. He's busy. It's not possible now.”
Additionally,
he addressed Boris Becker's previous conviction, as Becker spent 8 months in
prison after being found guilty of tax fraud:
"But
that has nothing to do with sports. From a sporting point of view, he is simply
one of the greatest experts in tennis," former world No. 2 added.
