It could be said that Roger Federer is fast approaching the twilight of his career, as the Swiss legend turns 40 next year.

Having accomplished almost everything possible in the sport, the tennis superstar may find it difficult to remain motivated. However, he seems as eager as ever to add more trophies to his ever-growing cabinet.
Federer underwent two knee surgeries this year that effectively cancelled the rest of his 2020 season. However, his rehabilitation has been successful and he eagerly awaits the 2021 season to resume playing.
"I am working on my rehabilitation and my goal is to be able to be 100% by December or January, so that I can compete the entire season in 2021." Federer said in a recent interview. "I do not believe in dream finals because it is very easy to be wrong. If I had wanted such an ending, I would have retired after beating Nadal in five sets in Australia in 2017, just as if I had defeated Djokovic last year at Wimbledon, I would not have retired either."

On his goals for the 2021 season

The 20-time Grand Slam champion added that he was still motivated to win more tournaments, and expressed gratitude at the opportunity to keep playing at a high level.
“I think I still have things to do. This year I will be 39, I will be 40 next year. It is crazy for me to think that I have been traveling the circuit for more than 23 years. Everything has happened very quickly. I have had a great time. Well, it seems like I was a junior just five years ago but it really will be 25 years now, I am grateful to continue having the passion to continue playing.
My physical trainer, Paganini, programmed me a training block for 20 weeks and asked me if I wanted to do it and I said yes, of course. I would like to discover what else is there for me, in tennis. I hope I can have a good 2021 and from there, we’ll see."
Severin Luthi, Federer's longtime coach, added that the World No.4 is unlikely to retire in 2021 as he still cherishes the moments on the ATP Tour.
“Roger still loves life on the circuit, I’ve never heard him say that he should stop because he wants a change of lifestyle or that he’s tired of travelling.” Luthi said. "Nothing can be 100% ruled out but given that he still loves tennis and the time he spends with the friends that he has everywhere, I don’t think he’s thinking of retiring in 2021”.
