Former World No.5 Kevin Anderson was having the best year of his career in 2018, when he reached the Wimbledon final and qualified for the ATP Finals.
However, it all came crashing down the following year, as he struggled with injuries that kept him out of action for the bulk of 2019. The South African underwent two knee surgeries, one in September 2019 and another in
February this year. Due to his extended hiatus, his ranking has dropped to World No.123, the first time he has been ranked outside the Top 100 since April 2010.
Nonetheless, the 34-year old has not let this deter him, as he has been working with his team to surpass his limits in 2021.
"In 2021, If I'm a Grand Slam champion with some ATP Masters 1000 titles, that would be a very successful year-and-a-half." Anderson told ATP Tennis Radio. ""That's what I'm aiming for along with my team. I'm really looking forward to pushing myself and giving myself that opportunity. At this point in my career, it's the most important thing for me. Everything revolves around that."
The two-time Grand Slam finalist acknowledged that he hadn't competed on the Tour in months, but stated that he has been taking care of his body during the absence.
"It's been quite some time since I was in that regular routine of competing and playing in tournaments." Anderson admitted. "I'm trying to take care of my body as much as I can. Hopefully, I can take these six months that I haven't been playing and add that to the end of my career.
Some of my biggest strengths that helped me get to where I was in 2018 needed to change a bit. I've always had a good work ethic and always wanted to keep improving… I also needed to trust my abilities and the work I had put in."
