British tennis star
Jamie Murray has been announced as the new director of the
Queen's Club Championships beginning in 2024, according to the tournament organizers.
Recently voted as one of the best tournaments on tour by the ATP, the Queen's Club Championships is an ATP 500 event that takes place in London. One of the few grass-court events during the calendar season, the tournament is often used as a tune-up for Wimbledon.
Murray's passion and efficiency at running tennis events made him a prime candidate
The doubles specialist, who has won seven Grand Slam doubles titles, was heavily involved in the organization of the popular
Battle of the Brits local exhibition event. His role behind the scenes and love for the sport contributed to his nomination for the role, according to LTA Director of Digital and Events, Chris Pollard.
"We are delighted to welcome Jamie into the Tournament Director role at Queen’s," said Pollard. "Jamie has shown huge passion and aptitude for running tennis tournaments over the past few years and his knowledge of playing at the very highest level on the ATP Tour for almost two decades, will help ensure the cinch Championships remains one of the most prestigious and highly-rated tournaments in the world."
Although Murray will still participate on the ATP tour during the 2024 season, the former doubles World No.1 will not compete during the week of the Queens Championships and the week prior, to finalize preparations for the tournament.
