The 2025 ATP and WTA season will undoubtedly be full of surprise performances, and legendary tennis coach Rick Macci has picked two teenagers whom he believes will shock the tennis community before the end of the year.
Macci has a history of identifying talent at a young age, having coached the likes of Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick during their early years. The American has acknowledged the current superstars as being difficult to topple, but predicted two rising stars will leave their mark this season.
The 70-year old took to social media to heap praise on Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca and Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva. Fonseca broke into the top 100 for the first time after defeating World No.9 Andrey Rublev in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open. The 18-year old had already raised some eyebrows after winning the title at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December.
Meanwhile, Andreeva kicked off her 2025 campaign with a semifinal appearance at the Brisbane International, losing to World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. The 17-year old would reach the fourth round at the Australian Open, losing again to two-time champion Sabalenka in straight sets. Nonetheless, she her performance has seen her break into the top 20, where she currently sits as World No.15.
"The two players that will send SEISMIC SHOCK WAVES thru the WTA and ATP in 2025 are Andreeva and Fonseca,” wrote Macci on Twitter. “Andreeva could dart into the top five and rattle the cage at a few Slams and the Fonseca will take many scalps of the top 30 players."
