Simona Halep surprised the tennis world by announcing her retirement following her defeat at the Transylvania Open. The former world No. 1 had returned to competition after four months but delivered a disappointing performance, falling 1-6, 1-6 to Lucia Bronzetti.

The two-time Grand Slam champion shocked everyone in her on-court interview by announcing her retirement from professional tennis at 33. While she had admitted a few days earlier that she was considering stepping away from the sport, there were no indications that Transylvania would be her final tournament.

Halep's career ended under the shadow of the doping suspension she received in 2022 after testing positive for Roxadustat, a banned substance. Initially handed a four-year suspension, her ban was later reduced to 18 months. At the time of her suspension, she had recently won the WTA 1000 Canadian Open and was ranked world No. 6.

However, since her return, results have not gone as expected. She played only three WTA tournaments and a couple of Challenger events, struggling to find her pre-suspension form. Persistent injuries played a key role in her decision to retire.

Halep closes her career with 24 titles, including two Grand Slam crowns—Roland Garros 2018 and Wimbledon 2019—along with three other major finals. She also claimed eight WTA 1000 titles and finished two consecutive seasons as world No. 1, establishing herself as one of the most dominant players of the last decade, with seven straight years ending inside the top 4.
