There was an interesting occurrence on Friday at DC Open Washington as play was suspended for a time due to lightning warnings in the DC area with matches featuring Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur suspended.
While rain sometimes wreaks havoc at tennis tournaments, lightning is a bit more of a rarer occurrence and potentially handed Corentin Moutet a bit of a reprieve in particular in his tie against Daniil Medvedev.
He had to have a medical timeout due to an issue with his left thigh/knee area before play was suspended due to lightning warnings in the area. Medvedev v Moutet and De Minaur v Brandon Nakashima were the first two games hauled off court.
Medvedev returned 6-1, 4-6, 4-5 down to Moutet with play suspended for around 40 minutes while they waited for it to clear but it could very much be an ongoing issue all night if the weather continues.
Asia Muhammad/Erin Routliffe v Caroline Dolehide/Sofia Kenin was also in the early stages at 5-6 to the latter while De Minaur was 2-1 up on Nakashima so not exactly game changing scorelines.
Fans started to come back into the courts around 40 minutes later with play resuming 20 minutes after if no further warnings were in the area. In the end the alert lasted for half an hour. A bizarre set of circumstances that perhaps could only happen in American events with Europe not having as extreme weather. From Wimbledon to the lightning of Washington where the former was 30 plus degrees for the most part, a complete juxtaposition.
